What is Linux?
The “Linux kernel” is an alternative to the Microsoft NT kernel at the heart of Microsoft Windows. Operating systems (OSs) that can be used instead of Windows or macOS have been created based on the Linux Kernel, known as Linux distributions or “distros” for short. Some people prefer “GNU/Linux” to acknowledge the major contribution that the GNU project made to Linux distributions.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of Linux is the fact that it is Free, Open Source Software (FOSS), meaning that the code behind it is freely available to modify and redistribute. This fosters collaboration, removes restriction, and of course means that FOSS software is usually free of charge.
You are using free software right now- this website is designed using WordPress (like 43% of the whole internet); most web servers are based on Linux; if you are using the Firefox web browser, that is open source and Google Chrome is based on the open source Chromium browser. You can find out more about FOSS software and its benefits here.
Once the preserve of geeks that appreciate the open source nature of Linux based operating systems, Linux developers have been trying to make Linux a credible alternative to Windows and macOS ever since its inception. Thanks to a passionate community of volunteers and contributions from open source software companies such as Canonical, Red Hat and SuSE, Linux is now a credible alternative to Windows and macOS with many compelling advantages (See Why Switch to Linux).
